Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier
April 27, 2006
The novel Born Confused is about a teenage girl, Dimple Lala. Dimple turns seventeen and suddenly realizes that life is more complicated than ever. Her parents are trying to set her up with a traditional, suitable boy but her best friend, Gwyn, falls for him instead. Dimple wants an unsuitable but what happens when the traditional and suitable boy her parents tried to set her up with becomes unsuitable? Throughout the novel, Dimple struggles in trying to understand her culture and her best friend. She tries to ignore the fact that she is curvy and Indian; instead, she tries to behave like her best friend who is American. Dimple does not want the suitable boy, Karsh, but when she sees him at a club, he becomes suitable. She falls in love but does not want to tell her best friend. I recommend this book to all teenagers who think that only their life is complicated. I also recommend this book to girls who are struggling with their traditional and the American culture. The novel keeps you hooked and is very humorous. It teaches about trying to find yourself and your culture in the midst of peer pressure and teenagers. I really enjoyed this book.

I think that Born Confused is a great book. Pretty much every teenager can relate to Dimple Lala and the questions and problems that she faces. At one time or another in one’s life there usually comes a period where one tries to figure out who they really are. They try to figure out how their heritage fits into their life and they try to fit in with everyone else. Most teenagers tend to fall into peer pressure and sometimes this can lead to something bad. Many of these things happen to Dimple Lala and throughout the book a reader feels like they know exactly what Dimple is going through. Along with Dimple’s continual confusion about who she truly is and how she fits into the world, Dimple also falls in love with an amazingly gorgeous, great DJ playing, totally unsuitable college boy. The only problem is so has her best friend. Throughout this book a reader gets to follow Dimple through one of her most intriguing summers. Will Dimple finally be happy with who she really is? Will she win the man of her dreams or will she forfeit him to her best friend? These questions plus many more keep a reader aching to know what is going to happen next. If you have ever felt confused about who you really were or how to act or what is going to happen with that special person, in other words if you have ever been a typical teenager, then this is definitely the book for you.
I love this book!
This book is a great read for those looking for something entertaining and fun to read. The story is great and fun. Anyone can relate to Dimple because she is a teen struggling through the exact same things that many of us are struggling with now. She grows and learns to be herself and learns embrace and celebrate her culture. I would recommend this book to everyone!
